Specialist Training in NeuroMassage for Spinal Cord Injuries (CPD)

About this course

At the end of this course, you’ll develop the knowledge, clinical reasoning and confidence to safely support clients living with spinal cord injury,

Australia Needs More Massage Therapists Who Understand Spinal Cord Injury

Every year, hundreds of Australians sustain a spinal cord injury, joining an estimated 20,000 people already living with SCI across the country. Behind every diagnosis is a person adapting to significant changes in movement, sensation, independence and everyday life.

Finding massage therapists who understand the complexities of spinal cord injury shouldn’t be difficult, yet specialist education in this area remains rare. Many qualified therapists hesitate to welcome clients with SCI into their practice. Not because they lack compassion or skill, but because no one has ever taught them how to adapt their work safely for this client group.

Developed from more than two decades of clinical experience, the NeuroMassage for Spinal Cord Injuries course was designed to change that. It gives qualified massage therapists genuine specialist knowledge, stronger clinical reasoning and a practical framework for safe, person-centred care.

What is NeuroMassage?

NeuroMassage is Neuro Training School’s approach to adapting massage for people living with neurological conditions.

Rather than following a routine treatment, you’ll learn how to assess each client individually, understand how progressive neurological conditions affect the body, recognise important precautions and adapt massage according to the person’s presentation, goals and changing needs.

The emphasis is always on thoughtful clinical reasoning and person centred care.

Why Specialise in NeuroMassage for Spinal Cord Injury?

Most entry-level massage qualifications provide little or no education on spinal cord injury. So when a client living with SCI contacts your clinic, it’s natural to ask:

  • Is massage appropriate for this client?
  • How should treatment be adapted?
  • How does altered sensation affect my approach?
  • What if the client experiences autonomic dysreflexia?
  • How should they be positioned and what about osteoporosis, pressure injuries or spasticity?

These questions are not signs of inexperience. They are signs of professional responsibility. This course teaches you to think clinically, assess the individual in front of you, and adapt treatment safely within your professional scope of practice.

Recognised Training You Can Build a Practice On

This course is recognised by

  • The Massage Association of Australia (MAA)
  • The association Neuro Training School is linked with in Australia.
  • Your training also carries internationally recognised CPD, so your certificate reflects professional development that is respected in the UK, Europe and beyond.

Why does recognition matter? Because it’s what allows you to stand behind your specialism.

Completing recognised specialist training means you can confidently promote your NeuroMassage® knowledge to clients living with spinal cord injury always within your qualifications, your insurance policy and your professional scope of practice.

Clients and their support teams increasingly look for therapists with recognised training, and this is how you show them you’ve done the work.

As policies vary, we always recommend confirming the details of your cover with your own insurer before advertising a new area of practice.

What you'll learn:

By the end of the programme you’ll have a practical understanding of:

  • Spinal cord injury, complete and incomplete injuries, paraplegia and tetraplegia
  • Nerve transmission and what happens when the spinal cord is damaged
  • Muscle tone, spasticity, altered sensation and neuropathic pain
  • Autonomic dysreflexia — recognising it and responding safely
  • Pressure injury awareness and skin integrity
  • Positioning, safe transfers and patient welfare
  • Osteoporosis and fracture risk
  • Working alongside allied health professionals
  • Clinical reasoning and safe adaptation of massage within your scope of practice

Most importantly, you’ll think differently about assessment and decision-making — so you can respond to the person in front of you, not a routine.
